Sidewalks Across America
By James Contreras
My company has relocated from downtown Chicago to Broadview since August of '07. Sincd that time I've been commuting in from Chicago to Broadview. On the last leg of my journey to work I walk approximately 4-5 blocks. As I walk, it occurs to me, time and again that it would great if more sidewalks were available across our state. It would help provide work for people to install them. A sidewalk would also improve public safety in terms of people having better footing in snowy/icy conditions. It could even encourage our residents to walk more, thereby getting more fresh air, and excercise. This last benefit would also help to promote a better atmosphere, of a neighborhood "alive" with people, instead of simply having cars zooming by. Lastly, I believe Illinois could take the lead in a larger picture of "Sidewalks Across America", by starting with "Sidewalks Across Illinois."
